5th Annual Football Festival
Gillette Stadium, Foxboro, MA

This year the 5th annual "Football Festival" for the first time ever was a 2 day event. Saturday 19th all round robin games were played at Manning stadium in Lynn, MA and the Playoffs/Championships were played inside Gillette stadium, Foxboro, MA on June 20th. 52 youth teams in 5 age categories took part in the event with teams competing from MA, NH, RI, CT, NY, PA, FL.

Over the 2 day event more than 115 games of flag football were played in the two great locations. On Saturday during pool play the 6-8, 12-14 girls and 15-17 divisions all played 2 round robin games for seeding, while the 9-11 and 12-14 divisions played 3 games each. After the the first day of games 15 teams headed down to Foxboro undefeated and ready for the second day of action.

In the 6-8 division the 12 teams that entered the tournament were from our own NSFFL, MA, Salisbury, MA and the NHFFL, NH. The games started early at 8am and after everyone had played their round robin games the Salem Witches, Peabody Tanners, NHFFL Hurricanes and Salisbury pride remained undefeated. In Gillette the 6-8 division was scheduled as the last to play on the day and due to unfortunate timing of a lightning storm the tournament had to be canceled. Players, coaches and families had to leave the stadium without getting the chance to be on the Gillette field, however the NSFFL and the Patriots remained in contact and secured a make up date, the ramining games were played on July 7th from 6pm onwards. In the play-offs there were a lot of games against common opponents, as the NHFFL Hurricanes defetaed the NHFFL Thunder 18-0 and the Peabody Tanners knocked out the Peabody Raiders 18-6, after the Peabody Raiders had knocked out the Peabody Patriots 14-12. The two Lynn teams also met in the play-offs and it was the Lynn Rams that sent home the Lynn Bulldogs early 26-6. The Salem Witches were looking strong after only giving up 2 points in the first 4 games and beat out Beverly 20-0 to move to the Semi-finals and even though their defence held strong for the majority of the game the offense could not put up a score as they eventually lost a very close 6-0 game against Peabody. In the other semi-final the #1 NHFFL Hurricanes went up against the #1 Salisbury Pride but it was the deep pass that would hurt the Pride as the Hurricanes put up 26 points to win 26-0. In the final game of the age group and tournament the Hurricanes coninued to go deep with huge success along with playing good defense stopped the potent Peabody Tanners offense to win the Championship game 20-0.

The 9-11 division had a record 20 teams compete in 4 groups. The 9-11 division had last years Champions Mo Steel from Miami, last years runners up Salisbury Pride and national finalists Red Storm from NH. This year there were also a few newcomers from RI, PA and Albany, NY to go along with the NSFFL all-star teams from Peabody, Lynn, Beverly, Salem, Revere and Saugus. Each team played three round robin games and Mo Steel, Red Storm, Salisbury Pride, NHFFL Tornados and NSFFL Patriots all finished undefeated. Both the NSFFL Patriots and Mo Steel looked strong as niether team gave up a TD in the opening round. On the second day in Gillette 3 of the first 4 games were all upsets as the #5 Plymouth Rocks defeated Saugus 13-7, #5 Peabody Tanners defeated #4 Revere 13-12 and #5 Salem Witches defeated #4 Lynn Rams 18-16. The final upset match of the day was the #3 Beverly Panthers defeating the #2 Lynn Bulldogs 20-12. The Red Storm and NHFFL Tornados from NH both cruised to the Semi-finals where they would meet the NSFFL Patriots and Mo Steel of Miami. The NSFFL Patriots defeated the Tornados 37-6 while the Red Storm were loosing 14-0 to Mo Steel when the game had to be called due to the lightening storm. As the tournament was caneceld which left no chance of playing the final game the first place was awarded to the Mo Steel team as they had a better points differential during the round robin and play-offs. It wasnt a great way to end the tournament for the 9-11 division as both teams had played very hard to reach the Championship game, hopefully the NSFFL Patritos can keep together and win the NFL regional tournament this fall which would send them to Nationals and give them another shot at Mo Steel.

The 12-14 division had a record 12 teams compete from MA, NH, NY,PA and RI. Each team played three games at Manning stadium and from the outset it was obvious that the team to beat was the boys in blue from PA as they only gave up 2 TD's in their first three games. NP Flag, Salem Witches and the Red Storm were the only teams to come out of their brackets undefeated. The games on Saturday didnt finish until 7:20pm that night so for most teams it was a quick trip down to Gillette to stay at the Patriots place hotel while for the local guys it was a early night to get ready for the playoffs. In the 1st round of day 2 most of the seeding held with the exception of the #2 Revere Lions getting knocked out by the #3 Albany Giants. The second round saw two upsets as the #2 Lynn Chargers beat out local rivals #1 Salem Witches and the #2 Peabody Patriots defeated the #1 Salisbury Pride. In the semi-final the Red Storm narrowly defeated the Peabody team 25-18 at the end of the game while NP Flag continued to dominate by defeating the Lynn Chargers 37-12. The Championship game was a one sided affair as the NP Flag team were victorious 41-14 over the Red Storm, but at the end of the day every team were winners as they got a chance to do what not many kids get to do and thats play on the field inside Gillette stadium, which will be a memory that will last a lifetime.

The 15-17 division had 5 teams compete in 2010, there were 3 teams from MA, 1 from NH and 1 from PA. In the round robin games both the Tanners and Cobras failed to record a win while the LBFFA and Ravens both finished undefeated. In gillette the 15-17 age division boys really shined playing some fast paced, extremely competitve flag football. The first game between the #4 and #5 was a close one but the Tanners managed to win 18-13 over the Cobras. The Tanners then advanced to face the #1 LBFFA and gave them a good run but the LBFFA won 19-18 to advance to the Championship. The Ravens had a little easier going of it as they defeated the All-stars 24-6. In the Championship game the Ravens were within 15 yrds of going in for the go ahead score with less than a minute remaining, when the QB threw an interception on a slant route giving the LBFFA the ball and the victory 16-14.

The 12-14 girls division had just 3 teams in total, the NSFFL all-stars made up of players from Lynn, MA, Peabody, MA and Revere, MA, the Eastwood Bears from Syracsue, NY and the CT Big Blue from Nagatuck, CT. On the first day of games each team played each other with the all-stars winning both games and the CT Big Blue going 1-1. On the second day in Gillette the girls played each other again and then the top 2 teams advanced to the Championship game, in the end it was the All-stars and CT Big Blue that reached the finals, Big Blue played the all-stars close in their final round robin game as they narrowly lost 19-12 but in the Championship game the All-stars trying to make amends for last years last second loss in the Championship came out firing and won the game 32-12.

Thank you to everyone that was involved with the tournament from the parents, coaches, players, refs, hard working staff to the City of Lynn, MA and the New England Patriots for giving the kids a memory they will never forget. Every year the tournament gets bigger and better from the location to the scheduling to the teams. Thank you for being a part of the 5th annual Football festival tournament.

The NK Thunderbirds players, coaches, and families would like to extend our sincere appreciation to the North Shore Flag Football League for all that you did to make the Gillette Stadium Flag Football Festival such a great success. Our kids had a fun time and truly appreciated the opportunity to play in Gillette Stadium, on the New England Patriots home turf. We were impressed at how well organized the tournament was and your ability to keep all the games moving along on schedule. Thanks for keeping the focus of the festival on the kids and helping them have an experience they will never forget!
All the best,
Jill Johnen - North Kingstown, RI

I just heard the great news from Brian Johnson about making up the tournament. I have 8 year old twins that are huge Patriot fans and huge flag football fans. They have been dying to get on the Gillette field to play. They are so excited to get another chance. Thanks for going the extra mile to make this happen. WE REALLY APPRECIATE IT!!!!            Donna Crowley - Pelham, NH

Just would like to say Thank you your right it getting bigger and better. Also not sure who the ref (red shorts) was in the 9-11 game against red storm. I really appreciate his concern for my injured player and he was right on the ball getting help for him, Can't say enough for that and the mother appreciate he quick reaction to him also. Thank you
Looking forward to next year already
Jay Smith - Syracuse, NY

Just wanted to thank you again for the weekend. The parents and kids had a great time yesterday. Walked around, had lunch at CBS sportszone and went to Patriots Museum. Talk to you soon . Have a good summer!                                                                                           Bill Reed - Revere, MA

I know you were disappointed in the way the tournament ended today however, we wanted to thank you for having us. We had a blast and look forward to coming back next summer. All my best to you, your staff and organization. It is truly first class and we are very fortunate to be a part of it.
David Fried - Miami, FL

Thanks again for putting on such a great tournament. You are a tremendously organized person and your dedication to youth sports is outstanding. We look forward to seeing you again next year. I couldn't think of a better place for me to bring my girls for there first ever tournament! Thanks
Jeff Scanlon - CT BIG BLUE

Great Job pulling it off Wednesday night.  Kids all had another great time at the entire tournament.                                                                  Jeff Johnson - Salisbury, MA

Hey Austin - I just wanted to send a note to say thanks for having us at the Tournament inside Gillette Stadium. The kids had a great time and all of your hard work is appreciated, especially with all of the rescheduling so the 6-8 year olds could enjoy the stadium. Everything was first class from the facilities to the referees. Great Job.

Bob Keenan - Pelham, NH

I just wanted to thank you and all of your staff again for the fantastic, fun all-star festivities you put together.  It was a great and thrilling experience for my family and I to take part in.  We appreciate all of the hard work you put in and know because of that, the event and the league, are the best of any youth sports league I have ever seen. Again, thank you so much for a great season and all-star event. I'll see you in the fall.                                                                                  Ted Hanley - Salem, MA

Last week I took my 8 year old son Jack, who has been involved in the North Shore Flag Football league since he was five, to Patriot Place and the Pats training camp.We started talking about the day he played down on the field in the tournament on Father's day and what a great day it was.  He caught a touchdown pass to tie the game as time was running out and the rain came down.  Unfortunately they lost the extra point tiebreaker and didn't get a chance to go back to Gillette to compete further, but that's football. My point is I wanted to say thank you.  I know how difficult your job must be.  I am sure you take your share of grief from parents and coaches.  But giving the kids a chance to play on the field at Gillette is a memory my son and I will share for the rest of our lives.  You made it a Father's Day I will never forget. I wish you continued success with the North Shore Flag Football program.  You do a remarkable job.                                                James Flaherty - Peabody, MA
