2009
NSFFL's
Championship Series
Last Sunday June 28th the 2009 spring flag
football season finally came to an end as the league organized
the second bi-annual Championship series. The Championship
series was introduced last fall and brings together the
Championship teams from each town/city in the NSFFL. In the fall
of '08 Peabody, Beverly and Lynn from the 7-8 division competed
in the first ever Championship series with Beverly being crowned
the first ever Champion of Champions.
Last Sunday 14 teams competed in all age 4
groups to see who would be crowned this season Champions of
Champions. Between the 14 teams from each of the 5 member
towns/cities the combined season record was 83-16-2.
In the 5-6 division both Peabody and Lynn
were undefeated heading into the tournament and after playing
each other in the second game of the day it would remain that
way as the game was tied 24-24. Peabody also faced Beverly and
continued their unbeaten streak by defeating Beverly 12-6.
Beverly bounced back however in the next game with a close 16-14
win over Lynn. Peabody finished with the better record over the
first two games so they fast tracked to the Championship game,
which left Beverly to face Lynn again, however Beverly got
stronger as the day went on and put away Lynn 28-18. In the
championship game Beverly managed to score a late TD and hold
off Peabody to win the championship 20-13. Beverly are the first ever 5-6 divsion
Champion of Champions. Congratulations!!!
In the 7-8 division Peabody and Beverly
were the only two undefeated teams as Salem and Lynn came from
3rd place in their respective league to win their championships.
In the first game Peabody and Lynn were very close until a late
interception returned for a TD sealed things for Peabody.
Beverly continued their winning ways against a very young Salem
team but despite the Salem team having the youngest players in
the tournament they managed to hold Lynn to a 6-6 tie. The last
game of the round robin saw 9-0 Peabody face the 9-0 Beverly
team and the game was as expected a very close one with Peabody
winning 20-18. In the play-offs the rankings held as Peabody
defeated Salem and Beverly beat out Lynn setting up another
great Championship game. Once again the two teams did not
disappoint but once again Peabody took a close game 13-7 to be
crowned Champions of Champions.
In the 9-11 division all 5 towns and
cities took part in the tournament. The Revere Texans only won
one game in their regular season but came through in the
play-offs and upset an undefeated team. In Salem the Bengals
were beat twice by the team they faced in the Championship game
but turned it on in the last game to be crowned Champions. Lynn,
Peabody and Beverly all finished top of their divisions but only
Beverly went undefeated on their run to the Championship. On the
day however it seemed like everything was up for grabs as
Beverly lost their first two games and Salem won their first two
games. Revere also put in a good showing as they narrowly lost
to Lynn 18-13. The play-offs are where the games really count
and it was Beverly and lynn that would advance after knocking
off Revere and Salem. Beverly went on to play Peabody in the
semi-final but lost out to Peabody for the second time on the
day 20-18. In the Championship game Peabody were too strong for
Lynn as they shut them out 28-0. Congratulations to Peabody for
being crowned the first ever 9-11 division Champion of
Champions.
In the 12-14 division only Peabody and
Lynn competed in a best of three series as the Beverly Champions
could not make the tournament. Both the Peabody Cardinals and
Lynn Cardinals only lost one game all season, however in the
Championship series Peabody came out on top as they won both
games making them the first ever 12-14 division Champion of
Champions.
It was another great day of flag football
on the north shore and a great experience bringing together all
the member towns and cities of the NSFFL. At the end of the day
every team that played were already Champions and should be
proud of their seasons accomplishments. As each league grows so
does the standard of flag football. Thank you to everyone that
was involved in the Championship series, it was great to see all
the players, coaches and parents from each town/city come
together.
Have a great summer and hopefully see you all next fall or
spring!!!
Photos coming soon.
