New England Championship Series

Sunday Dec 4th saw Woburn high school hold the first ever NEW ENGLAND Championship series. In previous years the NSFFL organized the "Championship series" for all the NSFFL league Champions to compete at the end of the season to see who would be crowned Champions of Champions. This past Dec 4th, 12 different NFL FLAG leagues (Peabody, Salem, Beverly, Lynn, Woburn, Saugus, Danvers, Marblehead, Salisbury, Westford from MA, Pelham, NH and North Kingstown, RI competed for the New England Championships. The combined records all of the teams that entered the tournament was 278-43-4. Out of the 48 Championship teams 24 had not lost a game all season. By the end of the day 91 games of flag football had been played and only 3 teams walked away with their undefeated record intact.

In the 5-6 age division a record 7 teams competed from Peabody, Lynn, Beverly x2, Marblehead, Salisbury and Danvers. Beverly had 12 teams compete during the regular season in the 5-6 division and as a result at the end of the season the division was broke up into "A"/"B"/"C", Therefore the "A" division Champion Bills (7-0) and the "B" division Champion Raiders 6-1 both entered the tournament. Out of the 12 games played in the young 5-6 division 7 games were decided by a TD or less and 2 games ended in a tie. Every team lost at least one game and the competition could not have been closer. Only the Salisbury Bucs came out of the group stage winning both its games. In the playoffs the #1 Beverly Raiders narrowly defeated the #4 Danvers Patriots 20-14, the #2 Marblehead Lions knocked off the #3 Peabody Vikings and the Beverly Bills edged out the Lynn Bills 16-12.  The semi-final games were also very close as the Marblehead Lions defeated the Beverly Raiders 24-18 and in a defensive battle the Salisbury Bucs earned their spot in the Championship game as they beat out the Beverly Bills 2-0.In the last game of the day and under the lights the Marblehead Lions shut out the Salisbury Bucs 14-0 to take home the New England Championship on their first ever attempt. Congratulations to all the teams in the 5-6 division for winning their league and representing their town!!!

The 7-8 division is the new 9-11 division as these young players are running their offenses like a well oiled machine, passing and catching the ball like their older counter parts, teams are playing zone defenses and pulling the flags like they have been doing it their whole loves. In this years 7-8 division the 10 teams in group A, B & C was coming into the tournament undefeated!!! Group D comprised of all the "B" division Champs. After the round robin games only the Salem Broncos, Pelham Patriots, Peabody Saints and the Peabody Cowboys were undefeated at 2-0. As expected their were a number of upsets and in the first round of the playoffs as the #4 Salisbury Vikings defeated the #1 Pelham Patriots, 28-18. Most of the rest of the seedings stood as the Beverly Bengals beat out the Danvers Saints and the Marblehead Eagles defeated the Lynn Vikings. In the quarter-finals the Peabody Saints defeated the Saugus Saints, the Marblehead Eagles knocked out the Peabody Cowboys, the Salem Broncos shut out the Beverly Bengals and the #4 Salisbury Vikings upset the #2 Beverly Ravens to make it to the final 4. In the semi-finals the Peabody Saints beat the Salisbury Vikings and the Salem Broncos defeteaed local rivals Marblehead Eagles 32-12. The Championship game was fast and furious as the down field passing attack of the Peabody was too much for the Broncos and the Saints took home the Championship after winning the game 26-6. The level of play in the 7-8 division is at the highest it has ever been and trully fun to watch, congratulations to all 14 7-8 division Championship teams that played in the tournament, we hope everyone had fun and learned a lot along the way.

The 9-11 division is defintely the most popular and most competitive division in NFL FLAG, these kids know exactly what is going on and know what it takes to win games, however the most important thing at this age is learning the meaning of team work and sportsmanship that will serve them well for years to come. A record 14 teams entered the New England Championship series from MA, NH and RI. After the group stage 4 teams were top of the pile as they all remained udefeated and they were the Peabody Chargers (MA), Salisbury Broncos (MA), Pelham Seahawks (NH) and NK Bucs (RI). There were some close playoff games in the first round as the #3 Lynn Seahawks defeated the #3 Beverly Lions 12-6, the #2 Lynn Saints beat out the #3 Woburn Bengals 18-14 and the Salem Vikings knocked off the Saugus Dolphins 22-14. In the second round of playoffs all the #1 teams won their games as the NK Bucs beat the Salem Vikings, the Peabody Chargers shut out the Peabody Patriots, The Salisbury Broncos defeated the Lynn Seahawks and the Pelham Seahawks shut down the Beverly Bucs. The top 4 teams were all still undefeated and something had to give and they did as the Chargers beat the NK Bucs 39-12 and the Broncos defeated the Seahawks 31-20. The Championship game was end to end and close until the final few minutes when the peabody Chargers pulled away with some key interceptions to seal the deal with a 45-32 victory to win the New England Championships. Congratulations to all the Championship teams that took part and gave it thier all!!! Every team should be proud of the way they played against the best compeition in New England, win or loose we hope you had fun.

The 12-14 division had a record 6 teams take part and every team was the best team from their respective league. The older 12-14 division kids can play football and many of them do, this is the level where the kids can coach  themselves to a degree and understand the game and what is happening.  Only the Defending Champion Pelham team and the Salisbury Lions would finish the group stage undefeated, the Pelham Jags tied 6-6 in the first game of the day with new comers the Westford Cowboys. In the playoffs the #2 Peabody Lions shut out the #3 Westford Cowboys and the other new comers NK Jets just beat out the Lynn 49ers after a great game 40-36. After their bye both the Jags and Salisbury Lions defeated the Jets and Peabody Lions to meet in the Championship game.  In the final game both defenses stepped up and the game was a low scoring affair but the the Pelham Jags held strong as they defeated the Lions to win the Championship game 14-8. Congratulations to the 12-14 division teams for making it to the tournament and showing good positive attitudes.

This was the first year the event had a 15-17 age division, the 15-17 age group in NFL FLAG is a very difficult group to get going as most players play multiple high school sports and while we have never had any injuries the risk is higher and as a result understandably, high school coaches and parents are not always in favor of participation. Having said that the older kids after the 12-14 age group still want to play and tournaments are a great way of getting the older kids together to play in a one day tournament. Players in 6 out of the 7 teams  have all played NFL FLAG at some point and just love to play, the kids are the biggest, fastest, strongest out there and can throw the ball the length of a field with a flip of the wrist, we have some real athletes out there and it is trully amazing what some of these "kids" can do. In their first ever tournament the Woburn Evolution won three games in a row to make it to the Championship game!!! Both the Peabody Tanners and Lynn all-stars are a combination of players that travel to flag football tournaments throughout the year, the Tanners finished with a 2-2 record and made it the semi-finals while the Lynn all-stars made it to the Championship game to face Woburn. The most impressive looking team on the day was the Pelham Generals also ex NFL FLAG players from NH as they defeated Salisbury 34-0, the Tanners 36-0 and then the Patriots 36-0 before being upset by the all-stars 27-6 in the semi-finals. Both the Salisbury Patriots and Peabody Patriots finished winless but were out there havng fun and giving it their all. In the Championship game the all-stars hung on for the victory as they beat out the Evolution 28-20 to take home the hardware.

The fall 2010 Championship series had 26 teams from 8 leagues, this past fall 2011 New England Championship series had 48 teams from 12 NFL FLAG leagues!!! The new Facilities at Woburn high school were perfect wth 2 football turf fields able to accomodate the huge number of teams in the tournament. We would like to thank all the players, parents and coaches for making the tournament a success and we would also like to thank all the refs, staff and everybody involved in the event for their hard work and helping make it possible. Keep playing, keep practicing and we hope to see you at the next New England Championship series.
