NSFFL's Championship Series

Sunday June 13th saw the 4th Championship series take place at Bishop Fenwick high school in Peabody, MA. 18 Championship teams took part from the NSFFL and competed in all 4 age categories that are offered. The combined record of teams entering the tournament was 113-5-2.

The 5-6 division is all about teaching the basics of football, from snapping a ball to running and sometimes throwing, the youngest division in the league is also about teaching good sportsmanship at an early age. All 3 coaches from Lynn, Peabody and Beverly were great role models as the youngest age group has yet to grasp the concepts of competition and the coaches did a good job on focusing the emphasis on the kids and making sure they all played a part. The three teams played all played each other before being ranked #1, #2 and #3, the #2 and #3 team played for a second time the first time they met Peabody won the game 34-24, however the Beverly Ravens turned the table and came out on top 26-20 in the playoffs. In the championship game the Lynn Chiefs coninued their winning ways and defeated Beverly 20-8 to be crowned Champions of Champions.

In the 7-8 division every team coming in was previously undefeated with the exception of Beverly that finished 4th out of 5 but went on a rampage in the playoffs and won three games on the same day to become the Beverly 7-8 Champions. All the teams were evenly matched as no one finished the tournament undefeated and 5 games were decided by a TD or less. After the round robin games Lynn was seeded #1 while Beverly was #2. In the playoffs anything can happen and usualy does as the #5 Salem Panthers first defeated #4 Saugus and then #1 Lynn to make it to the Championship game. #3 Peabody defeated #6 Revere and then #2 Beverly to make it to the final against local rivals Salem. The championship game was a repeat of the first 7-8 division game of the day where the Salem Panthers handed the 49ers their first loss of the season 26-24 this time around it was a defensive battle and as the rain started the 49ers took the title game 12-6. Finishing the 49ers season with a 12-1 record.

In the most popular 9-11 division the games can get very competitve and are a lot of fun to watch, the scores are typically high and the action is fast paced. The 9-11 Championship series division is so tough that the undefeated Falcons from Peabody didnt manage to record a win on the day!!! The Revere Dolphins who were seen as underdogs for the tournament represented well as they had tough games and only lost 14-18 to the finals runner up and 14-8 to the eventual champion, they also beat Saugus in the playoffs to get to the semi-finals. The Lyn Steelers who won one game and tied one game went into the playoffs as the #3 seed, but after beating out Peabody 26-20 and Salem 20-8 they made it to eh Championship game. The Beverly Panthers who finished #1 overall also made it the Championship game after defeating Saugs, Peabody and Revere. In the Championship game the Lynn Steelers turned up the heat as they pulled away from the Ravens to win the game against Beverly 32-8, finishing their season undefeated at 12-0-1.

in the 12-14 division the combined records of the 3 teams that played were 23-2. Peabody, Salem and Lynn all took part in a tournament at the University of Southern NH, and while every team played well Peabody came out on top. This time around the games were close again but Lynn had the edge after beating both Peabody and Salem to receive a bye to the Championship game. The first time Peabody and Salem played Peabody took the game 27-26, in the playoffs Peabody again took the game 26-20. In the Championship game the rest paid dividends for Lynn as they came out and beat Peabody 38-6. After the Lynn chargers were crowned Champions of Champions, Lynn had taken  home 3 out of the 4 age division available, last springs Championship series Peabody took 3 out of 4 champinships, is the tide turning?

Congratulations to all the teams that took part in the NSFFL Championship series, every team displayed good sportsmanship and every team was already a Champion before they even set foot on the field. Congratulations to this spring's "Champions of Champions" and looking forward to doing it again in the fall where other NFL leagues join in on the action.
