NSFFL's Championship Series

Sunday, June 18th saw teams from the 6 North Shore Flag Football leagues compete to find out who would be Champions of Champions. The combined win/loss record of the teams in the tournament was 75-14-2 and for the first time included "A" and "B" Champions. The NSFFL Spring season typically finishes earlier than most other local leagues so only NSFFL teams take part in the tournament. In the 5-8 division both the "B" div champs Beverly Giants and the Salem Cowboys came out of the round robin games undefeated, giving them the #1 and #2 seedings. In the playoffs the Peabody Colts knocked the "B" div Lynn champion Chargers out 18-8 to advance and the "A" div Beverly Saints shut out the "B" Beverly Giants 32-0, while the Salem Cowboys defeated the Peabody Colts in a close 12-6 game. The 5-8 Championship was a defensive battle and went down to the wire but for the second year in a row the Salem Cowboys were victorious as the won the Championship game 6-0.

In the 9-11 division the "B" div Lynn Chargers and Saugus Patriots both won their opening games to head into the playoffs undefeated. The only 2 teams in the 9-11 division that finished their season undefeated were the Saugus Patriots and the Peabody Giants and they both faced each other in the final round robin game with the Saugus team scoring late to up the Peabody Giants 14-13. In the playoffs, the Peabody Giants defeated the Danvers Patriots 6-0, while the Salem Saints beat out the "B" div Champion Peabody Patriots. Lastly the "B" div Lyn Chargers knocked off the Beverly Panthers 24-13. In the second round the Saugus Patriots knocked out the Salem Saints 32-22 and the Peabody Giants lost out in OT against the Lynn Chargers 19-18. The last game of the day was the Championship game between the Saugus Patriots and the Lynn Chargers, the Chargers had played great all day and reaching the finals against "A" division teams was quite an achievement but in the end the Saugus Patriots were too much as they shut out the Chargers 40-0.

Congratulations to all the teams that took part in the Championship series and to the Salem Cowboys and Saugus Patriots that both ended their season with a perfect record. The Championship series is a great tournament as it lets the regular season teams from each league compete and play against kids they might be playing against in other sports for years to come. The Championship series teams are not all-star teams and every kids gets to play and enjoy a tournament style atmosphere. The next Championship series will be Dec 4th location TBA.
