NFL FLAG NY JETS Regional Qualifier CHAMPIONS!!!

Every year the NSFFL takes teams to the NFL FLAG regional qualifier, last year the league took one team to the NY Jets qualifier and 2 teams to the Baltimore qualifier. This year the league took all three teams to the NY Jets regional qualifier which was held at the NY Jets practice facility on November 7th. The three teams, 9-11 Division - NSFFL Patriots, 12-14 Division - NSFFL Bengals and the 12-14 Girls division - NSFFL Jets all took a 55 seater bus along with parents, coaches and family.

The NY Jets qualifier was the biggest out of the 8 regionals held across the USA with 80 teams competing for a chance to get to the National Tournament of Champions in Florida. Altogether there were 40 teams in the 9-11 division, 32 teams in the 12-14 division and 8 teams in the girls 12-14 division, teams came as far as FL, OH, CT, NY, NJ, RI, MA, NH, PA to compete.

Due the amount of teams in the tournament each team had as much as a 3 hour break in between games, games were just 20 mins long with two 10 min halves. The first NSFFL team to play on the day at 9am was the 12-14 division NSFFL Bengals from Peabody. The Bengals faced the SFX Chargers and came out firing as CJ Alimonte scored first for Bengals. The Bengals never looked back as they put away the Chargers impressively 24-6. The Bengals next game was at 12noon and again the team dominated the competition with the deep pass to Mike MacKay and the elusive running of CJ Alimonte, by the final whistle the Bengals defeated the Coxsackie Flag team by a maximum of 33-0. In the final game of the round robin section the Bengals needed a win to secure a place in the playoffs. Only the top team from each group advances to the playoffs and at 2:30pm the Bengals found themselves up against the local Westwood Jets, however the Bengals were too strong and mercy ruled the Jets 32-0 before the end of regulation time. Out of 32 teams that started the 12-14 division tournament the Bengals were ranked 4th due to just giving up the one TD earlier in the day. The Bengals had their toughest game of the day at 5pm against the LBFFA Chargers of PA. The Bengals were behind for the first time in the tournament but the boys held strong and came back to win the game 13-12 to head into the semi finals. In the semi-finals it was the NSFFL Bengals against NP FLAG of PA, NP FLAG had already won the Gillette stadium football festival earlier in the year and previously beat the NSFFL team in the semi-final a year earlier in Baltimore. Unfortunately the result was the same again as they NP FLAG were too much for the Bengals in height and speed as they defeated the Bengals 28-0 and went on to win the Championship. It was a long day but the boys from the North Shore represented the league well and finished 3rd out of 32 teams with a final record of 4-1. While everyone played well on the team MVP honors go to CJ Alimonte, congrats guys.

In the 12-14 Girls division the NSFFL Jets lead by 3rd year QB Taylor Dabney were playing against a record 7 other girls teams from around the area. In the girls first game they played against the East Yonkers girls from NY, the girls had a nervous start but managed to score first, however the Yonkers girls came back quickly to tie the game 6-6. The score by the Yonkers girls seemed to get the North Shore girls going as they quickly scored back to back TD's before the half. In the second half the girls didnt let up one TD as they managed to win the game 25-6 to get off to a good start. After a 2 hour break the girls went up against Team Revolution of NJ and before the half was even over the NSFFL girls were down 12-0, after some frustrating officiating and confusion the girls were all in disarray. The NSFFL boys that were watching on the sidelines all left, it looked like the game was over but at the half coach Alvin calmed the girls down and got them re focused one play at a time. The girls managed to put up a TD to bring it back to 12-6 and then on the next drive an interception by Taylor Dabney brought the team to the 2 yrd line where they managed to punch in to tie the game. On the extra point the Revolution went offside giving the NSFFL girls half the distance to the goal line, but then the Revolution went offside again, giving the girls the ball at the 1 yrd line, they managed to get it in to go ahead 13-12, the defense then stepped up and managed to stop the revolution on their next drive and after taking a knee the NSFFL Jets kept their hopes alive after winning 13-12. We went and told the boys that we came back to win and they couldnt believe it. The final game was against last years runner up the NJFFA girls from NJ. The NSFFL Jets girls played well but could not get a rhythm going on offense, they would have a nice play for good yardage but then false start or go offside. The NJFFA girls were much older and more experienced and it showed as they moved the ball down field and scored twice before the half. In the second half nothing much was working for either team but the 2 TD's earlier proved to be the difference as the NJFFA girls won the game 13-0 and went on to win the Championship game. The girls finished 3rd out of 8 and proved they could play with the best of them, the MVP for the team for the 3rd year in a row was Taylor Dabney. Congrats to all the girls as they played hard and never gave up.

The 9-11 division had a unprecedented 40 teams from PA, NJ, NY, CT, NH, MA, OH, RI, there were 10 groups of 4 teams. The only way to get to the play-offs was to win out your group which typically means going undefeated!!! The NSFFL Patriots had been waiting for this one for a long time as they lost out in the semi-finals last year and were determined to go further this year. The Patriots also entered the Gillette stadium football festival tournament last June and made it all the way to the Championship game against Mo Steel from Miami but the lightening storm prevented the game from happening. The team made up of the best players from Danvers, Peabody, Salem and Lynn have been scrimmaging and practicing getting ready for the qualifier and were as ready as they ever would be and with only 3 players returning next year due to age eligibility this was the year it had to get done. The team checked in at the NY Jets practice facility at 7am and had to wait until 10:30am for their first game against the GTFF Eagles. All the games for the 9-11 division were played on the indoor turf field at the practice facility. The NSFFL Patriots looked very fast and confident as they defeated the GTFF Eagles 27-0 and without giving up a first down. The second game of the day was at 1pm where they faced a good NJFFA Rams team with some boys that looked tall enough to be in the 12-14 division, nevertheless the Patriots took care of business and shut out the Rams 19-0, after the second game the team started to draw some attention as other coaches and referees started making comments about how fast and organized the team looked. In the final game of the round robin at 3:30pm the the Jets went up against the AYYA team who had already lost a game but were looking to upset the Patriots. It didnt happen as the Patriots again didnt give up a first down and defeated the AYYA team 28-0.

Heading into the playoffs and waiting for the final games to finish the Patriots were poised for 2nd or 3rd ranking depending on how other results went as the #1 NJ Panthers also didnt give up a TD and scored more points that the Patriots. In the end the Patriots got the #2 ranking after the CT Big Blue gave up a safety to push them to the #3 spot. In the playoffs even the #10 team was unbelievable and the Patriots watched as #10 played #7. The #10 YYFFA team from Ohio won the game and after a short break went on to face our #2 Patriots. The YYFFA team scored the first TD against the Patriots all day but the play of QB Jordan McaFee and WR/DB Devonn Allen took over the game as the Patriots beat out the YYFFA 33-6. In the other quarter final game the #6 Red Storm from NH defeated the #3 Big Blue from CT 7-0 to advance. The Red Storm team from the NHFFL started several years ago and have been to the Nationals before after winning the Buffalo qualifier in 2008, last year in the regional they defeated the NSFFL Patriots in the semi-final and narrowly lost 7-6 in the finals. Both teams are familiar with each other as they play each other a lot in competitions and scrimmages and the NSFFL has always been on the short end of the stick so to speak. The coaches felt if they could defeat the Red Storm they would be able to win the whole thing as psychologically this was a tougher match up. Both teams played hard and fair and the Red Storm held the Patriots to their lowest score of the day but in the end it was enough as the NSFFL Patriots shut out the boys from NH 20-0 to advance to the Championship game. 11 hours after registering the Patriots were matched up against the #1 NJ Panthers, what was once a packed complex was down to just a few parents and supporters, the game was very tight and tense but the Patriots went up first making it 6-0, then on the Panthers next drive Devon Allen ran an interception back for a TD and after converting on the extra point the Pats were up 13-0 and feeling confident, however you could tell the Panthers were in the championship for a reason as they never gave up and came back to score to make it 13-6. The last few minutes were nerve racking for everyone but when it mattered the kids kept it together and had one final stop on Defense to give the offense the ball back and the opportunity to take a knee and win the game.

The celebrations were awesome as the coaches, kids and parents errupted onto the field, the long day didnt seem so long any more as the kids went to receive their unique football trophies. Everyone was thanked for their efforts and now the kids are full of excitement for the trip to the National Tournament of Champions in Disneys Wide World of sports complex in Florida. The team will compete against 7 other teams from across the country in an effort to be National Champions, the games will be aired on ESPN and NFL Network (TBA).
The MVP for the team and the tournament was Devn Allen, who made some of the most spectacular catches for TD's and interceptions you will ever see in this age division, Devonn ignited his team and made everyone play better. Congratulations to the NSFFL Patriots for winning the NY JETS regional!!!

The combined record of all three teams was 12-2 and with two 3rd place and one 1st place finish out of 80 teams the NSFFL players, coaches and parents can be proud of their achievements, but not just on the field, we have good kids first and good players second. Win or loose we make sure the league and our region are represented well. These were two e-mails the league received the day after the tournament.

Congrats to your 9-11 team. Very happy for your organization. Please keep the tradition of representing the New England area well. Your a class act best of luck....see you at Gillette!
Jeff Scanlon, Nagatuck, CT

It was good to see you, your coaches and your team enjoying the celebration after winning the championship. All of you have always been a class act -- and when we couldn't walk away with the prize, it was satisfying to see that you did. I hope you can keep the momentum going and bring home the national title.
Ken Eyring, Pelham, NH

Thanks again to everyone that made this happen from the Parents to the coaches and especially the kids. We are looking forward to raising some money for the kids and getting started on practicing to bring home a national title!!
